Oh my goodness, this piece has waited a VERY long time for it’s big reveal!!
I think I first mentioned it back in August!
It’s where two joys in my life collide!
I’m so glad I discovered @winchester.acappella just under two years ago - it’s a joy and a privilege to sing with this amazing group.
“But now,” says the Once-ler,
“Now that you’re here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better.
It’s not.”
from The Lorax by Dr Seuss
This piece evolved from a seed of an idea back in the spring, based on an incredible vision and dream, long held by our Musical Director.
It’s based on part of ‘The Lorax’, which had initially formed part of the musical ‘Seussical’ but was cut from the production prior to its Broadway performance. Our Musical Director had harboured a dream of arranging this piece for a cappella voices and after quite a number of years, finally, he was given permission to do so. Around 18 months after, we performed this challenging piece, incorporating puppetry, costume and musical theatre, but a cappella throughout. The evening also included a wide variety of our other repertoire of songs, alongside other local performers and was a FABULOUS adventure to be part of.
This keyring was an “I wonder if…” idea which I took along to Summer School back in August.
Armed with my wax carving and a tub of scrap silver offcuts, under Jo’s tutoring, I successfully sand casted my design, reusing my offcuts and scraps of silver (reusing and no waste was a win, as the theme of The Lorax is that of caring for our environment) and made this one-of-a-kind key ring for our awesome MD.
After a lot of polishing and a trip to London Assay Office for hallmarking, it was finally ready!
My heart is full of thanks to my fellow singers who wholeheartedly supported this when I tentatively suggested the idea of this gift a while ago.
It’s now been presented in celebration of a person who had an ambitious dream, who brought that dream to life and was kind enough to bring us all along for the ride - culminating in a successful, colourful, ambitious, visionary and fun musical masterpiece!
I’m not sure which I loved most, being part of such an amazing show or learning new things to make this key ring…
…as I said - where two joys collide.
